Our Company

Vegetein AS is an Estonian-Canadian food technology company producing plant-based proteins and mixes for the food industry.

Vegetein have spent the last decade developing and proving innovative extraction technology for proteins and seed oils and are now ready to scale up production and distribution. Vegetein’s products are low-impact, vegan, GMO-free and hypoallergenic. Its core product replaces allergenic soy and pea in food processing at competitive pricing and value. With its unique environmentally-friendly technologies Vegetein cost-effectively produces protein concentrates and isolates from oilseeds (canola, hemp, flax, sunflower). There is no comparable equivalent in the market.

Vegetein has easy feedstock access, global patents and licensing for its sales to industry customers across Europe, the USA, and Asia. It is going through FSSC 22000 accreditation till Q2 2024 ahead of scaling of sales to key customers such as HELA, Milzu, Nestle.

Our Technology

We use state-of-the-art innovative solutions and bespoke designed equipment, backed by 18 years of research and pilot testing. Processing is done at sufficiently low temperatures to minimize denaturing proteins, preserving their functionality for food manufacturing – you can only denature them once.

There are two types of products we can produce – concentrated protein flours and protein isolates. Oilseeds are dehulled, followed by carefully but thoroughly separating the oil from the protein, fibre and other components of the seed heart. Resultant concentrated protein flours contain over 50% protein, depending on the oilseed, with few other sources of calories, and can be ingredients in a wide variety of foods.

Concentrated protein flours are also the ideal feedstock for our isolates production process. Precipitated and soluble protein isolates (PPI, SPI) contain >85% and often >90% protein, and are used in high value specialist applications.

All processes produce minimal waste, with most system outputs having commercial value. Protein products and virgin oils are, naturally, foodstuffs, while technical oil & seed hulls can be used as biofuels.

Our Protein Products

– are non-allergenic,

– non-GMO (key in some markets),

– with an excellent nutritional profile,

– at the lowest cost compared to competitive products in the market, and

– have close to zero impact on the environment.

In September 2022 EAS and Kredex approved a grant to Vegetein AS for the project: “developing new textured meat replacement products”

Project Goal: As a result of the project, Vegetein AS intends to develop textured vegetal meat substitutes that food end-producers can use as raw materials in their products, such as vegetal burger patties, sausages, meatballs, snacks, etc.

Short description of the project: Vegetable meat substitutes have similar shape, texture, appearance, bite, flavour, etc. to traditional meat products. A well-prepared vegetarian meat substitute cannot be distinguished by the consumer from a traditional meat product in terms of taste and appearance. The products developed in the project are unique on the market as they are based on protein meals produced by Vegetein AS, which are unique in quality and composition and cannot be substituted by other products available on the market.

The applied research phase of the project will be carri

ed out by Vegetein AS in collaboration with its research partners, followed by industrial testing of the best product ideas.
